Tadić: Kosovo cannot join United Nations

“This fact alone speaks clearly that without Serbia, the problem of the future status of Kosovo cannot be solved,” Tadić said, adding that the idea of forcing Serbia into a corner with a plan for a sped up recognition of Kosovo independence is not giving any results. He added that Serbia is for these reasons posing the Kosovo question before the international institutions—the UN Security Council and the International Court of Justice—adding that in the end, a constructive, peaceful, sustainable, and bilaterally acceptable solution must be found. Tadić added that after the ICJ decision, Serbia will decide what legal and diplomatic steps it will take, but repeated that Serbia will never accept the plan of Martti Ahtisaari. “I deeply believe in negotiations and dialogue and other political obligations, in non-violent methods, a peaceful and rational process. All who believe that another route exists are very wrong. Without negotiations and dialogue and a compromise by both sides, there is no solution,” Tadić said, adding that the politicians urging Priština to refuse compromise and dialogue are making a mistake. Biljana Plavsic to be secured by Serbian Home Ministry

If Swedish authorities allow she shall land in Belgrade on the Republic of Srpska Government’s plane. If that request happens to be rejected what is most likely, Plavsic shall leave Stockholm on ‘JAT’ flight to Belgrade. She has air ticket booked for that flight.
The relatives of Biljana Plavsic confirmed once again that she has the citizenship of the Republic of Serbia and that she shall live in Belgrade.
Plavsic was released from prison after expiration of two thirds of her 11-year sentence ruled to her by the Hague Tribunal for crimes against humanity during wars in Bosnia.

Tadić wraps up China visit

Tadić said that the China trip was very successful, adding that “the door has been opened for our government and businesspeople to achieve a strategic partnership through economic gains, and in the interest of both countries”.
In talks with the Serbian president at a business forum on investment and trade in Shanghai, the members of the Chinese business community inquired about conditions for investing in Serbia, possible business arrangements and economic situation in Southeast Europe.
Tadić said during the forum that Serbia “offers many possibilities for starting up business arrangements that will be in the interest of both sides”.
“It is my great pleasure and I believe that the visit to your country is a historical one for Serbia. Even though China and Serbia have very different roles at the beginning of the 21st century, we achieved long-term friendly relations through the strategic partnership,” he said.
Tadić stated that China is a key economic factor in the world, while that Serbia is “on the European path, and has a central position in Southeast Europe”.

He explained that “Serbia is becoming a large construction site”, adding that only in Belgrade and in surrounding suburbs there are already five bridges planned over the Danube and Sava rivers.

“Construction of Serb apartments to continue”

During his visit to Gračanica, Rašić said that this was “the only way” for Serbs to survive in the region.  He added that decentralization was important for the Serb community, which was dwindling each day because people were leaving.  He said that better living conditions needed to be ensured for Serbs in the province. Rašić reiterated that the construction of these flats had been initiated by his ministry.  “We have 20 apartments constructed by the Labor and Social Welfare Ministry in Gračanica alone, in the final phase of building. In addition to these 20, we have started building 14 more flats in Dobrotin, and this trend of building apartments in villages where the Serb community is located will continue,” Rašić stressed.

France “supports visa abolishment”

France is strongly in favor of canceling of visas to Serbia as soon as possible,” Jean Francois Terral told Beta news agency on Sunday, and added that he believed progress had been made in solving the technical aspects related to the issue, while “what remains can be done”.
“I would add that French President Nicolas Sarkozy told Serbian President Boris Tadic very decisively that France supports abolishment of the EU visa regime for Serbia’s citizens,” the ambassador was quoted as saying.
Terral reminded that during Tadic’s recent visit to France, Deputy PM Bozidar ?elic met with French ministers for immigration and European issues.
“Technical details were considered then, and France stressed how much in favor of the visa abolishment it is.”
Terral also told the news agency that a French-Serbian chamber of commerce would be set up to offer support to French companies doing business in Serbia.

Visa-free to Russia from June 10

“The agreement signed on February 20 in Moscow will make travel from one country to the other easier for citizens with valid passports. They will be able to enter and remain on the territory of the other country for up to 30 days without a visa,” the ministry says in a statement.
The statement adds that Russian citizens traveling to Serbia, or vice versa, will not need an invitation letter for private visits or tourist vouchers from travel agents.
“The visa-free regime is designed for citizens of the two countries who have a temporary residence permit in the territory of the other country, for accredited personnel from diplomatic representative offices, consular sections and the offices of international organizations, as well as members of their families who have diplomatic or special passports,” the statement continues.
Diplomatic and special passport holders will be able to stay in the other country for up to 90 days without a visa.
All other forms of travel between the two countries, including for business and education, will require a visa, the Itar-Tass agency reports.

Tadic expects faster EU integration

The president said that he was sure that the enlargement process, covering the Western Balkan states, was likely to pick up pace once again once the economic crisis began to abate and following the end of this year’s election cycle in certain EU member-states.
The president told state broadcaster RTS that political membership in the EU had no alternative.
According to Tadic , last week’s visit by U.S. Vice-President Joe Biden was of vital importance for Serbia’s European integration.
In that context, it was also important that Biden had offered open support to Serbia’s EU integration on behalf of the Washington administration, underlining that it would not be conditioned on Serbian recognition of Kosovo independence or membership of NATO, he stressed.
Guests on B92’s political talk show “Utisak Nedelje” agreed that relations between Belgrade and Washington would play a big role in Serbia’s further European path.
“In effect, it means as follows—obviously, the U.S. is not an EU member, obviously they don’t vote there, and obviously they have no right of veto, everyone knows that, but they do hold a lot of sway in many European countries, not to mention the whole Union,” said former Serbian Ambassador to the U.S. Ivan Vujacic.
“There’s no doubt that if they were against it or had a particularly negative position vis-?-vis our country for some reason, that it would handicap us on that path,” Vujacic said.

“And I think it’s most significant that they support those aspirations of ours, that they want cooperation in certain areas where we can cooperate,” said Goran Piti?, chairman of the Economic, Finance and Administration Faculty Council.
“If our partnerships not just with NATO, but in general with countries that mean something in the world, guarantee that we’re a part of the arrangement with the IMF, part of the World Trade Organization, if we can get support from someone who’s strong for us to move more quickly to the EU, then those are all direct, not indirect effects, and America is a player that’s vital if those things are to move faster,” he said.
Defense Minister Dragan Šutanovac said that it was na?ve to expect “to feel any changes in your life the day after one meeting.”
“In the same way, it’s na?ve to expect that you can sit down and wait and think that something will just happen,” said Šutanovac.
“I agree with everything Goran’s said here, but we need to find an essence and sense as to why someone would help us, why they would open those European doors,” he said.
Meanwhile, as regards Biden’s visit to the region, Tadic said that no-one could expect Serbia to ask the Bosnian Serbs to stop insisting on compliance with the Dayton Accords and Bosnia-Herzegovina’s division into entities foreseen by the agreement.
“The survival of the two entities in Bosnia cannot be called into question, but what relations are like between the two entities, that’s a matter of an agreement between the peoples that live there,” said the president.
DM: Biden’s visit sign of respect
Defense Minister Dragan Šutanovac says that U.S. Vice President Joe Biden’s visit constituted a “sign of respect” for the Serbian defense system.
The minister told B92 that “Biden’s recent visit to the ministry is a sign of respect for the entire Serbian defense system.”
Šutanovac told B92 that “last year was full of challenges, with a high level of risk and looming threats, but we successfully did our job and ensured security for our citizens.”
He said that “this has shown that the defense system is under both democratic and civil control.”
Šutanovac stressed that “the level of military cooperation between Serbia and the U.S. thus far has been a pillar in relations between the two countries.

Passports for KiM citizens to be issued in Belgrade

According to his words the EU wants to know what would happen if Serbia would get visa suspension. Would that mean that those visas would be suspended in all other countries in which citizens might seek Serbia citizenship?
Dacic said that Serbia citizens are entitled to passport and that our country has fulfilled all conditions for the ‘white Schengen’.
‘All issues regarding visa liberalization are operational and they do not concern any political conditions. We are considering purchase of software for inclusion of a finger print into the chip since that shall be a trend in Europe in the years to come’, Minister Dacic said.

America pushing Serbia towards EU

This could be concluded from the yesterday’s debate over Serbian-American relations in which the most important analysts of the topic took part. Our former ambassadors to the US Zivorad Kovacevic and Ivan Vujacic said that independence of Kosovo is finished story for the new administration in Washington. They also believe that there shall be no pressure on Serbia to recognize Kosovo but only to respect its international obligations.
The debate was organized by the Center for democracy in cooperation with Friedrich Ebert Foundation.
‘Biden’s visit has big political significance just because of the decision to give importance to this region in spite of other problems. Belgrade has no reason to impose the topic of Kosovo. I expect that Biden shall express strong support to European integration and it would be very useful that he says that loudly. Washington is in the first place interested in the stability of the region and European integration processes are the best manner to achieve that. Biden’s visit is also important in the economic sense since it sends the message that Serbia is safe for investing’, Kovacevic said.
According to Vujacic no significant improvement in relations with the USA shall be possible before legal opinion on Kosovo independence by the International Court of Justice.
Many participants in the debate pointed out that European integration is not possible without good relations with the USA and warned of the problem of the increasing anti-American sentiment especially among younger generations in Serbia.
Participants also pointed out necessity for cooperation in the sphere of security and that the relations between Serbia and the USA are equal to relations between Serbia and the NATO. They insist that Serbia shall have to give up military neutrality and find out new models of cooperation if it does not want to be in hostile surroundings.
